From timeless classics to the latest craze in collectables, the hottest new toys have been unveiled at one of the industry’s biggest showcases.

And this year’s toughest critics on the toys themselves? Children.

The lineup includes furry fruit stalls, toys that tell stories, and fishing games without the mess, all tested by kids who know what they want.

“We get a whole bunch of kids in a room, we show them the toys and let them go for it,” said Alice Sanders.

The Hot Wheels Stunt Garage (sold on Amazon Australia for $84.97) proved another favourite, while F1 Uno Cards ($12.95; Amazon Australia) and Micro Pets are predicted to be hot property by retailers.

Pokemon Cards took the top spot for collectables, proving nostalgia never misses, with the trading card game becoming a serious investment opportunity.

“People are investing a lot of money in Pokemon. The returns are very high and it’s become a real industry now,” one industry expert said.

A fresh look and new technology for Lego bricks hit stores today, featuring light and sound functions that allow children to role play with other sets in ways never done before.

The showcase also featured items that haven’t even hit shelves yet.

Meanwhile, Elf on the Shelf may look a little different this year after going viral in America.

A massive five-foot elf will make its way to Australia straight from the North Pole for the very first time.
